Periodontics

Periodontology or Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that includes studies supporting the structures of teeth, as well as the diseases and conditions that affect these supporting structures/tissues. The supporting tissues are commonly known as the Periodontium, which includes the Gingiva (gums), Alveolar Bone, Cementum, and the Periodontal Ligament. Periodontics also focusing exclusively in the infalmmatory diseases that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth.

Periodontics Dentistry Treatments

  • Deep Cleaning: The plaque and tartar are removed using different procedures in Deep Cleaning. The common procedures are called Scaling and Root Planing. 
    • Scaling: Scaling is a treatment procedure by scraping off the tartar & plaque deposits from around, above and below the gum line. 
    • Root Planing: Root planing is the treatment procedure to gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where the germs gather, and helps remove bacteria that contribute to the disease. In some cases, a laser may be used to remove plaque and tartar. 
  • Medications: Medications are used after treatments like Scaling & Root Planing and are usually effective if the Gum diseases are in initial stage. 
  • Surgical Treatments: Surgical Treatment Procedures are necessary if inflammation and deep pockets remaining after treatment with Deep Cleaning and Medications. 
    • Flap Surgery: Flap Surgery procedure is done to remove tartar deposits in deep pockets or to reduce the periodontal pocket and make it easier for the patient, dentist, and hygienist to keep the area clean. 
    • Bone & Tissue Grafts: In Bone Grafting procedure, natural or synthetic bone is placed in the area of bone loss, that can help promote bone growth or guided tissue regeneration.
